Prizes and auction merchandise, both silent and live, as well as
a number of other value packages await patrons to the First Wave
Celebration, the Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association’s summer campaign to
help save lives, starting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Kilohana
Plantation lu‘au pavilion.
Merchandise for the silent and live auctions as well as the special
value packages and the grand prize have been donated by Kaua‘i’s
many residents and businesses, said Andy Melamed, a First Wave
Celebration organizer, in a release.
“Putting together the prize packages and displays has us all
excited in the spirit of this worthwhile event,” said Melinda
Uohara, who along with the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i, will be assisting
in the displays and coordination of prizes.
The grand prize package is the Kuhio Auto Group Great Alaskan
Adventure which will have Alaska Airlines flying the winner from
Lihu‘e to Seattle, Wash., for two nights at the Westin Seattle
Resort followed by a “Five Star” adventure cruise to Alaska aboard
a Holland America Cruise liner.
Comedians Augie T, Frank DeLima and Andy Bumatai will host a
variety of packages throughout the evening as live auctioneers. The
launch of these packages start at 5:30 p.m. when a Wyndham Resorts
weekend for two in Po‘ipu is packaged with a Na Pali Sunset Dinner
Sail for 10 people aboard Capt. Andy’s “Southern Star.”
A Secret Beach Weekend Retreat at Michelle Hughes’ estate in
Kilauea includes a catered dinner and massage for two and will be
awarded to a lucky bidder during the night.
Verizon Wireless will be joined by members of the Hawai‘i Junior
World Surf team to auction off Verizon’s G’zOne Commando Android, a
water and shock proof phone, which will be enhanced with an
autographed Bruce Irons competition surfboard as live auction
bidding continues.
Tina Marie, the hypnotist who thrilled people at the recent Kaua‘i
County Farm Bureau Fair and the earlier Administrative Assistants
celebration at Kilohana Plantation, is offering a personal hypnosis
session which will be packaged with an original plein-aire painting
by Princeville artist Pierre Bouret and a $100 certificate from
Savage Pearls will go to a lucky live auction bidder.
The live auction finale will go on following Taj Mahal’s
performance and will feature a Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa
Presidential Suite weekend including dining certificates to Tide
Pools or Dondero’s Restaurant, a couple’s massage at the Anara Spa
and a collectible, autographed guitar by Taj Mahal and other
performers from the evening.
Additionally, North Shore artist Steve Valiere, whose work is the
official brand of the Association of Surfing Professionals Hawai‘i
Triple Crown, and Mercedes Maza, a Hanalei master water color
artist, will be creating live art pieces for the evening on stage
while the performances and celebration takes place. These donated
works will be part of the live auction during the night, proceeds
benefiting the KLA First Wave Ocean Safety campagin.
Custom jewelry and gift certificates from Goldsmith Kaua‘i,
Grande’s Gems, Jim Saylor Jewelers, Savage Pearls, Kaua‘i Gold and
Red Dirt Pearls highlight the silent auction area which will also
feature art works from Patrick Ching, Jenifer H. Prince, Patrice
Pendarvis, Aaron Habermann, Wade Koniakowsky and Jim Ingham.
A Rivera Stand Up Paddle board and Danny Chang paddle contributed
by Wassup Paddleboards and Country Brokers Real Estate will add
variety to the silent auction.
Random prize packages throughout the night will feature a six-night
Kaua‘i destination vacation including two nights at the Kaua‘i
Marriott Resort and Beach Club, two nights at the Sheraton Kaua‘i
Resort, and two nights at the Westin Princeville Resort.
This package will headline the Rotary Club table along with a
golfer’s dream getaway which includes two nights at the St. Regis
at Princeville, four rounds of golf at the soon-to-reopen Prince
Course and an autographed Robert Trent Jones golf book.
Melamed will be joined by Kaua‘i County Council member Dickie Chang
in weaving through the night of entertainers, prizes, auctions and
games which will include a $500 Kukui‘s at the Kaua‘i Marriott
“Joke of the Night” competition.
“Let’s Make A Deal” and “Save A Life” games include a signed coffee
table book by ocean photographer Clark Little, a matching boogie
board and bag from Deja Vu and a host of surprise gifts, including
the awarding of 10 pairs of slippers from Olu Kai, the official
footwear of the Hawai‘i Lifeguard Association.
“The prizes up for grabs are a true reflection of this island
coming together for a worthwhile cause,” Chang said.
