MOSES LAKE – Spots still remain open for the Columbia Basin
Herald’s Newspapers in Education Golf Classic.
The event, hosted by the Coeur d’Alene Golf and Spa Resort, starts
Sunday.
Event Coordinator Tom Hinde has openings for individual players and
hole sponsorship, he said.
The cost for individual players is $175 per player or $700 for a
four-person team. People can sponsor a hole for $1,000. The price
includes tournament fees for four golfers and two newspaper
recognition ads.
All of the money from the event goes to the Columbia Basin Herald’s
Newspapers in Education program. The program provides newspapers to
more than 75 classrooms in the Columbia Basin last year, Hinde
said. The newspapers are provided without charge.
“This program plays a role in educating our young people and
preparing them to become more informed citizens,” Hinde said.
The program promotes literacy and gives students a link to analyze
events and ideas and build awareness of local, national and global
events, Hinde said. He pointed out newspapers are an excellent
educational tool and teachers contact them every year to ask for
classroom copies.
Teachers provide the newspaper feedback on the usefulness of the
program every year. He noted several letters the paper had
received, including two from Moses Lake and Quincy. Both letters
noted the paper helps teach children literacy and English.
Registration for the fourth annual tournament starts at 10 a.m. The
practice range opens at the same time with unlimited warm-up and
sports massage. A golf clinic, hosted by PGA teaching professional
Owen McClain starts at 11:45 a.m.
“Owen is the teaching professional at the Moses Lake Golf Club,”
Hinde said. “The $175 per golfer is all inclusive. It covers
everything for the golfer, forecaddie service … the water
shuttle, the golf clinic, the complimentary Coeur d’Alene resort
golf bag tag, practice balls.”
The driving range at the resort is unique, he said. Golfers hit
floating golf balls into the lake.
The tournament starts at 1 p.m. and is a four-person scramble
format, Hinde said. The format allows all the golfers on a team to
drive from the tee. The team captain selects the best drive and all
of the player, except for the person whose shot was used, hit their
next shot from the spot.
“The rating of the golf course for golfers is really, really
something special,” Hinde said, pointing out it was ranked by Golf
Digest and Golf World magazines.
The event closes with a barbecue at 5 p.m., with awards, prizes and
contests being given at 5:30 p.m.
“You won’t be disappointed as our tournament will be bigger and
better than ever,” Hinde stated. “(The) tournament will feature a
record number of hole contests.”
