This year’s event is broken up into two weekends, with the amateurs playing the weekend before, over February 11 and 12.

The CSUMB course is a beautiful course set on the coastal sand dunes with oak trees and ice plants, although it is exposed to the typical winds you’ll find at the beach. There are a great variety of holes with elevation changes, and both woods and open areas as well as distance shots. It’s a very rugged, yet scenic course, not meant for the faint of heart, and not very beginner friendly.

The Monterey Bay Area is spectacular, from the hillside vineyards and redwood forests down to pristine beaches teeming with wildlife. This would be a perfect time to plan a fun vacation around a great disc golf tournament. The weather in the area this time of year is typically foggy in the morning the sun coming out in the afternoon, making for an ideal climate to play outside.

The Pro event is a PDGA sanctioned A-Tier Super Tour, and will begin with a check-in at 8:00 a.m. at the Meeting House in building 98, a player’s meeting at 9:30 a.m. and tee-off at 10:00 a.m.

Some of the top disc golfers will be in the competition, including Nate Doss of Capitola, California who is currently ranked the number one player in the world. He was the winner of the Professional Disc Golf World Championships held in the region last summer.

Three-time Women’s World Champion, Valerie Jenkins of Capitola, will be competing with the women. She is currently ranked the number one female player in the world, and finished second in the Pro Worlds last summer. Jenkins had many victories in 2011, including the U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championships, the PDGA Championship and the European Open.

The first time K.C. Dermody played disc golf was in the spectacular Black Hills of South Dakota. She has since become addicted to promoting the sport, and enjoys playing in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She welcomes comments and suggestions, with the goal of promoting the sport of disc golf throughout the world. Find her on www.facebook.com/KCDermodyWriter or Twitter @kcdermody.
